The Huron Valley Sportfishing Club is a non-profit chapter of the Michigan Steelhead and Salmon Fisherman’s Association established and incorporated in 1985 for the promotion, protection, and enhancement of Sportfishing in the Great Lakes and connecting rivers and streams. Based in the Monroe and Downriver Detroit Area, we’ve recently modified our chapter name from the Huron Valley Steelheaders to the Huron Valley Sportfishing Club to reflect our focus on events and fishing opportunities much more varied than strictly Steelhead and Salmon. Although we all love the strength and fight of some of the larger Great Lakes species, we are also blessed to be located on Lake Erie, one of the most productive walleye waters in the world. We spend the Spring and Summer chasing walleye and perch in the Western basin and large walleye and tons of crazy steelhead in the Central basin. Our later summer schedule takes us to Lake Michigan for the summer king fishing, and in the fall we come back to Lake Erie for perch and trophy walleye off the Ohio shoreline.
The HVSC is a smaller club with about 100 members that really enjoy the sport of fishing. We focus on friendly competition and a cooperative attitude to help our fellow members and friends find and catch fish so that the entire group can have a good day on the water at all of our events. We are also always close by, within radio contact of our group in case anyone has a problem and needs assistance. Our mission is to encourage the younger generation to become more involved in the outdoors through fishing outings, lure making demonstrations, sending kids to MUCC camp, and organizing and funding an ongoing Salmon in Schools Program. We strive also, to improve the sport, recruit new fisherman and assist with sharing the knowledge that many experienced fisherman have to offer. Our fishing simulator exhibit has given both kids and adults the opportunity to catch a King salmon or other species, giving them a taste of the excitement surrounding the sport of fishing. We also sponsor an annual fishing outing for the children of Penrickton School for the Blind and Carr Elementary School and participate in the Special Olympics fishing outing in Monroe and the Annual Fish-N-Fun Day in Taylor
Our club is involved with several of the major fishing and outdoor shows in the winter months such as the Ultimate Fishing Show and Outdoorama in Novi, and our own club’s show, the Mich-Ohio Sportfishing Expo in Monroe at the MBT Expo Center at the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Our show has succeeded in exposing the general public to many vendors, fishing pros, and cutting edge information at a very small cost.
We have monthly meetings held in Taylor on the third Thursday of every month and we bring professional fishermen and state officials, tackle manufacturers and special guests to make presentations to each meeting to help spread the information about the latest programs, newest techniques and latest equipment for all of our members and guests. The meetings are always open to guests and prospective new members to give all interested parties a chance to meet the group and get aquainted. We also promote our crew’s list program at these meetings where we try to match up fisherman with boat captains in need of a crew for our events. It’s a great way to meet new friends and talk to people with common interests in the outdoors.
